15 Travel Quotes to Get You Going

Travel inspiration comes in many different shapes and forms. Here’s some for lovers of words.

The following quotes are some of my personal favorite excerpts about travel. Some are from travel writers, and some are just from great works of literature. Lots of different things inspire travel and put me in the travel mood, and often these are words from people who just know exactly how to say what the wanderluster feels:

1. “Not all those who wander are lost.” -J.R.R. Tolkien

2. “We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again- to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more.” ― Pico Iyer

3. “to travel is worth any cost or sacrifice.” -Elizabeth Gilbert

4. “The wish to travel seems to me characteristically human: the desire to move, to satisfy your curiosity or ease your fears, to change the circumstances of your life, to be a stranger, to make a friend, to experience an exotic landscape, to risk the unknown..” -Paul Theroux

5. “See the world. It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories. Ask for no guarantees, ask for no security.”- Ray Bradbury

6. “I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” -Robert Louis Stevenson

7. “Tourists don’t know where they’ve been, travelers don’t know where they’re going.” -Paul Theroux

8. “Don’t tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you traveled.” – Mohammed

9. “We leave something of ourselves behind when we leave a place, we stay there, even though we go away. And there are things in us that we can find again only by going back there.” -Pascal Mercier

10. “I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything.” – Bill Bryson

11. Wherever you go, go with all your heart. – Confucius

12. The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are. – Samuel Johnson

13. A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.” -Lao Tzu

14. “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” -Marcel Proust

15. “Travel far enough, you meet yourself.” -David Mitchell
