5 Reasons Why You Need to Hike The Black Forest

Located in the Baden-Württemberg state of Germany, the Black Forest is every hiker’s dream! And there’s no better way to experience the Black Forest than staying in Freiburg. Here’s why you need to put the Black Forest experience on your bucket list.

Ominous Name
Do not fear the Black Forest. Its bark is far worse than its bite! Get it? Bark…because trees. Anyways, it’s actually a beautiful place that you have no reason to fear. It got its name from the pine trees that block the light and make the forest look dark from a distance. With a name like that though, how could you not want to check it out?

Fairy Tale History
It’s said that the Grimm Brothers were inspired by the Black Forest for their stories like Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, and Sleeping Beauty. There’s even a Fairy Tale Road in Germany, over 350 miles long so tourists could see many of the locations that inspired both inspired that stories and were important parts of the Grimm Brother’s lives.

The hostel alone is reason to go. The Black Forest Hostel will make you feel like a true backpacker. You have the option of a dorm or private room, and if you want the real backpacker experience then you should stay in the dorm where you can meet plenty of fellow travelers! Always opt for the dorm no matter where you go. On top of a kitchen where you can do all the cooking you want, there’s an awesome chill room where you can borrow a book or play games. If needed, you can rent a bike from the hostel for a small fee.

Slackline Heaven
If you’re into slacklinking, this is the perfect place for you. There are trees to tie it up everywhere! Not to mention the Globetrotter World Slackline Masters is always hosted right in Munich, so you’re slacking skills are right at home.


The trails are easily marked so there’s no need to worry about getting lost. There are tons of hidden gems in the forest like abandoned buildings or staircases under the moss and roots that now cover them. You can spend a few hours in there or bring a tent and some supplies and make a weekend of it. You’ll find surprises in every corner.
