How to Show Love to Your Relationship While Studying Abroad
Going away for a semester at a time can put an extreme strain on a relationship. Here how to go abroad solo while keeping the love constant.
FaceTime Frequently (but not all the time)
Thank goodness for technology. The feeling of being able to see someone’s face and know that all is well is a great feeling. It’s a wonderful thing to talk to your significant other from across the world and feel like you’re talking in person. Take this tool and use it. If you are having a bad day, talk to your parents, boyfriend or girlfriend. You have no idea how much it can help change your perspective and make everything seem so much better. Just five minutes will put a smile on both of your faces. On that note, do not constantly stay on FaceTime and talk to people from home. Don’t forget how fortunate you are to be given the opportunity to travel abroad. Use this time abroad to your full advantage.
When traveling from city to city and country to country, collect postcards. They are inexpensive, easy to collect and the perfect gift to send to your loved ones. With a sweet message on the back, you can make someone’s day and let him or her know that you are thinking of them. In the long run, postcards can also be helpful. You can look back at them and know where you have traveled, and remember the fun times you have had. Bonus: People still love getting these old school mailings.
Send lots of pictures
Whether it is through email, over text, or on Facebook, send plenty of photos. A few snapshots of your travels will show your loved ones how much fun you are having, and also remind them that you are safe. Pictures are worth a thousand words, right? So share your experiences and memories through imagery, they will feel more connected than ever when viewing your breath-taking photos.
Give them “Open when” notes
These are notes that you write before you leave for your trip. For instance, people often write on the front of letters “open when you miss me” or “open when you’re sad,” etc. These letters can contain sentimental words that your boyfriend or girlfriend will appreciate. Letters like these are very sweet gestures that will make your loved ones feel more secure when you’re away.
Pick up little gifts
To make sure your significant other knows that you’re thinking about him or her, pick up little trinkets while you travel. For example, your favorite trinket from Rome or a small sculpture that resembles Paris would be an awesome object to pick up. Little gifts, such as these, are inexpensive to send and a fun thing to look at together after the experience is over. And lets be honest, your boyfriend or girlfriend will treasure whatever you send because it came from you!
Try and make time for them
While you are traveling the world, they are at the University or at home doing the same old thing. Listen to what they are experiencing and try to remember what it’s like back at school. Just because you are on the other side of the globe does not mean that you can’t be there for them. Be sure to make it known that you care about their day to day lives just as if you were right beside them.
