I am a part of a co-ed business fraternity called Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, Incorporated, at Tennessee State University. Our Chapter is the Chi Psi Chapter in the Southern Region. Most of the time we abbreviate like this (ΑΚΨ), so once you see that, know that’s us! Alpha Kappa Psi also known as “AKPsi” is the oldest and largest professional business fraternity, and it was founded on October 5, 1904 and was incorporated on May 20, 1905. It is currently headquartered in Indianapolis; Indiana. We have ten male founders who met at New York University and by the grace of the up high the title IX acts was passed which allowed women to not be discriminated against, and in 1976 women were granted membership into the fraternity. Alpha Kappa Psi has a creed that recognizes that we live in deeds, not years; in thought, not breath; in service, not in figures on the dial. We count time by heart throbs, when they beat for God, for man, for duty. He lives most who thinks most, is noblest, acts the best. We live by that creed and act on it as such.
College is merely the beginning of business education; we share our knowledge and experiences openly with the people we work with, regardless of rank or position. In addition, we seek out opportunities to share our real-world experience with brother members, and in doing so we enhance the lifelong learning of those members. While the business world offers many opportunities for success and advancement, it also requires us to make decisions about how we succeed. We understand the importance of making decisions and conducting business in a way that takes into account both legal and ethical considerations. We serve as role models through their consistently fair and ethical conduct. Our other college chapters as well as our own serve as living laboratories for classroom concepts and professional conduct. In turn, lessons learned in the fraternity prepare members for success in the business world. Because we recognize the value and importance of our Fraternity, we are united in our passion to build a legacy for the future. We support the fraternity through volunteer leadership and monetary gifts. On the Tennessee State campus we do community service big and small like Trash dorms runs, we know it’s a hassle to take out your trash so we come do it for the students sometimes just to show we care and want to make their lives a little easier.
Alpha Kappa Psi is recognized as the premier developer of principled business leaders. We are steady shaping people and shaping business which is why this fraternity is near and dear to my heart. They have shaped me into the beautiful professional woman I am today. I had a two page resume, didn’t know how to dress professionally and look at me now. Networking and interviewing like no other.
I currently hold two positions within my chapter; I am currently the vice president of pledges and also Miss AKpsi for the 2013-2014 school year. My roles are very important. As the Vice President of Pledges also known as the VP of Pledges my duties include but are not limited to the coordinating all events pertaining to the recruitment of prospective members. My responsibilities include RUSH event coordination, correspondence with students, advertising events, and marketing strategy. I’m also over the management of the pledge education program. My responsibilities as Miss AKPsi is simple be the face of the fraternity. I am a queen, so I will act as such. I am to meet and greet at every event, be in the homecoming parade, keep my sash neat and wear at appropriate times. I am also to accompany Mr. AKPsi when he makes an appearance.
I was fortunate enough to become inducted in the Fall 2012 Semester and I have never regretted my decision in gaining membership. I gained 29 brothers that semester, since I was off the line A 30 new E.R.A. Era stands for Elaborate Realms of Art. With all of our personalities the older brothers say that we were very artsy during our pledge program. What I love most about my fraternity is that we are a non-hazing organization. We welcome those with open arms when they meet the requirements and interview process. We are about helping those who are in professional need.
The best part about the fraternity is that we Alpha Kappa Psi as an organization are committed to providing its members services they cannot get anywhere else. These services come in the form of events and educational opportunities designed for its members to develop their professional, personal, fraternal and leadership skills. So we always get to travel to other cities for conferences! Which is so much fun meeting all different brothers from different cities, even different countries! It is always exciting, especially the learning experience you get to take back with you on how they deal with issues in their chapter or as a whole on their campus. But the fun and business doesn’t stop once you graduate! We also have alumni chapters which is great for those who aren’t even in college. Overall I wouldn’t trade my fraternity for the world and I’m glad I was able to give you this little insight. Until next time lovelies!
