For a lot of us the words “Global Citizen” mean being aware of and contributing to finding solutions that make the world a better place.   At College Tourist, we believe that travel plays an important role in being a Global Citizen. We believe that those students who have access to going abroad empower themselves to have a wider view of the world they live in.

Why Global Citizenship matters.

College Tourist was honored to be part of the White House Travel Blogger’s Summit in early December, where the Obama Administration promoted the importance of cultural exchange and the desire to broaden the way in which Americans are engaging people around the world in every way possible.

Global citizenship not a new concept for the White House, with Franklin D. Roosevelt stating during his 4th Inaugural Address in January 1945: “We have learned that we cannot live alone, at peace; that our own well-being is dependent on the well-being of nations far away…. We have learned to be citizens of the world, members of the human community.

Fast forwarding to today, President Obama said in his State of the Union address: “Expanding cultural and educational exchanges among young people is really a corner stone of our effort to engage people around the world.”

The Administration is turning its focus to future leaders to shape the perceptions of the United States with the people young travelers are engaging with, and in turn, for young Americans to be shaped by these international experiences themselves.   To facilitate an increase in young Americans engaged overseas, the White House has announced the launch of a White House Study Abroad Office.

They hope to not only increase the number of Americans engaged overseas but to make sure that Americans are engaging with the whole world including emerging and developing regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia and Latin America.

Why does it matter to students?

The White House message compliments our own College Tourist passion for student travel.  At College Tourist, we know that students come across issues like poverty, better access to education, environmental issues and challenges facing our planet every day in their college careers, whether it’s in the classroom, being involved in a cause on campus, through Greek affiliations or by being culturally engaged on study abroad.  When students step outside the classroom and travel, they are witnessing cultural diversity firsthand and are encouraged to challenge themselves with different learning experiences.

We often hear students say “Study Abroad changed my life!”  The experiential education that is found in travel not only benefits the student traveling but both the community abroad and in the United States.  Cultural exchanges are where young international leaders are born.

With this in mind our hashtag for this semester will be #GlobalCitizen.  Our Spring Ambassadors have experienced the eye opening education and personal growth that comes from travel.  This makes them the perfect College Tourist Ambassadors and global citizens!  Join in as they become the voice of student travel and study abroad for College Tourist on campus and on line.

About College Tourist Ambassador Programs

College Tourist helps students by sharing their travel experiences, both within the United States and abroad.  Students may be eligible for college credit after completing one of our ambassador programs depending on the requirements from their college.

We know College is a busy time both in and out of the classroom, so we offer students support during the program via a number of guides including article writing templates on various topics, WordPress, social media and marketing guides and experience.  The use of program specific calendars and group chats promote team camaraderie and organization.  At the completion of the program, students have created an author’s profile page which includes all their articles in once place that can be easily attached to a resume.
